Food Banks give to individuals/discounts to nonprofits.
If you are on SS/SSI, nothing is threatened.
It is imperative that there is a one-page contract that emphasizes individual visiting is a guest. You are not a landlord; individual is not a tenant. This way, you have the right to immediately order guest individual to go if there is any problem. Make sure contract is explicit and there is a clause that the guest says you want the authorities called if for any reason you are asked to leave and that all belongings are immediately removed or donated to the nonprofit.
Make house rules simple: God rules the home - everyone out of the house (except for holidays) Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., any illegal activity and/or police contact means immediate dismissal.
If, however, you are allowing children with parents, and/or disabled on SSI, times will have to be accommodated.
Do not provide food! Bureaucracy can imply that you are running a business. But nonprofits are allowed to buy at food banks (six cents a pound) and you can donate food to your guests validating your Samaritan home with a caring/sharing attitude. The contract confirms that the guest does not have a felony or moral turpitude record (unless you allow this) and validates that the guest will respect homeowner/peers/neighborhood with no disrespect/loud noise/outside gathering/no uninvited guests and releases one/all/nonprofit from any insurance liability.
If one home in every six-block radius did this, the problem of homelessness would be eliminated nationwide.
I DID THIS OUT OF MY HOME FOR A DECADE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM FROM NEIGHBORS OR CITY.
Once a guest challenged to stay longer; police were called – shown the contract; they escorted person out.
Alas, others who were doing similar in city did not ensure monastery type environment; neighbors got alarmed. City went on crusade to close all sober living environments. Although, my attorney said I would eventually win; equity jeopardized by fighting City Hall – so, I sold, relocated.
If you have two-bedroom apartment use one to help homeless mother with child/children, saving yours.
It is crucial to keep a low profile in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, it is mainly during holidays that the spirit of loving our neighbor as self is demonstrated by the greatest majority. How do you put the word out to those who you are trying to help:
best places are churches/ALL social services.
To learn more on the how-to and the history of ARC and current outreach ministry, please read more: (Rev. 11/20)
When I founded ARC, initially sustained under ULC (146) christening ARC a church/me minister.
I learned investors purchased houses, did similar,
operated multi sober living homes, securing government funding.

Volunteer Founder receives no salary – solo in computer responding. 2005 holy/holidays attacked by 23-year-old Catholic white male referred by Social Services: broke fiduciary trust bringing him to newly opened refuge; knew violent history/did not warn. He attacked peer who got away getting help. I suffered 42 stab wounds, blinded in right eye, in a coma two months; lost everything. Slow miraculous slow recovery, phenomenal above and beyond caring by two children. For over a decade offered refuge out of my home and sponsored others without any incident.
However, because of what happened, I now encourage anyone sponsoring what I did to offer two-year recovering veteran addict complimentary accommodation in exchange for full-time supervision, account/tax management. It is imperative that you keep low profile! Although legal, best that neighbors do not know what you are doing, home like hermitage.
Do homework – investigate who is helping homeless:
contact all the churches, social service, nonprofit organizations.
I am on the eve of my 80th; blind in right eye; slowing down/ no staff/active volunteers anymore. Be patient if you email.
GOD BLESS - PRAY/mine daily you/yours+++
