August 5, 2020 Wednesday CITIZEN My brother, ..., was campaign consultant, who wrote

Although I did not have his brilliance in the political spectrum,
I do have citizen empathy regarding the care of our country’s future.

Harvard historian and New Yorker writer Jill Lepore’s latest book, These Truths: a History of the United States, is an epic, sweeping and often disquieting look at the nation’s past.

The 800-page opus, starting in the 1500s and moving along briskly to Donald Trump, also serves as a liberal cri de coeur – an answer to conservative claims on the stewardship of our history, our founding principles and especially the Constitution. …

During the 2005 holy/holidays I was attacked at homeless refuge I was opening by white 23-year-old: 42 stab wounds/coma two months/blinded right eye – miracle recovery – lost everything!

He had attacked his own grandfather; enforcement called – their solution with the aid of social services was to bring him to me without warning. A week later, attacked peers, then me.

Although very vulnerable, on the eve of my 80th,
I still am active in caring/sharing, as able, talents: one of which is `social concern’ letters.

After countless posts urging massive action to vote by mail, FINALLY, there is consensus.

Did it not ever dawn on leadership, that minorities cannot miss work –
and to laboriously go through a ballot on election day is too much even for highly educated.

Perusing at home is more feasible; even better is church or secular voting social-distancing group going through it together.

If the Democratic party does not organize these NOW and make sure HAND DELIVERED to register’s office, with monitor/reporter taking informal count at polls, there is going to be even more malfeasance.

And why, oh why, after two decades, do we still have an electoral college?

And why, oh why, is it possible that elected officials do not get: you are getting your paychecks, you are able to pay your bills, and yet, …

LIBERTY, JUSTICE FOR ALL, PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is still, for most part, LIP SERVICE. SHAME! ENOUGH!

Wilser, Jeff: The Book of Joe It is the eve of my 79th (4/17/41).

In 1968 I founded micro nonprofit in response: ask what one can do; never applied for funding sans pay with mission: care/share as able. 1990 sponsored homeless refuges serving primarily recovering AA/NA. November 1 – 2, 2005 opened new: Veteran focus. December 15 2005, attacked: 42 stab wounds – blinded right eye/coma two months.

I lost everything; now SS/SSI below poverty:

blessed with miracle recovery; son/daughter took me in.
 My roots are Sicilian/Catholic/Jewish.

3/10/2020 CITIZEN - Dear Notable, I beseech you…host `church social’ and/or `at home’ ballot voting by mail Democratic `party’. Low-income minorities are not able to `miss work’ . They do not have the time or wherewithal to analyze measures and cast essential vote. This past election college graduate mother of two with high powered job waited and thought it would be easy `run in and vote’. The line was too long. Result: no vote!!! Following are additional problem solving solutions worthy of attention:

Dear Luminary, Forwarded to notables/media; please care/share. The issues dividing our country have solutions. There are problem solving experts: https://www.ted.com/ VOTING Absentee Ballot: the ease and convenience of leisurely reviewing issues and marking ballot is incomparable to those who stand in lines, feel rushed, and make mistakes hurrying for work or other. Any registered voter may vote-by-mail! Should be top community awareness priority: advocates can host `vote-by-mail’ house parties. In the United States, absentee voting takes place "by mail-in paper ballot prior to the day of the election." Typically, "the voter may return the ballot by mail or in person." HOMELESSNESS Cities buy three bedroom homes under nonprofit https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/530226780 National League of Cities, and used two rooms (three to a room), with a recovering addict (free board/stipend) to manage home, situation would soon be under control. Incoming residents would be guests invited for three-month sober living contract: receive the first week free, then guided to social services for allotment/food stamps. Thereafter, contribution would be $100.00 per week: everyone contributes to an open food pantry for communal meals. The city would benefit with equity; homeless off the streets – encouraged and helped regarding work or school. When you realize that incarceration costs average one thousand per day; and most contemporary programs are a disaster, this is phenomenal legal solution sanctioned by Public Law 100-415; 100-430. Recovering addicts living in sober home environment based on A.A./N.A. principles have extremely low recidivism.  EDUCATION Children reach college without learning how to shop/bank/use a checkbook. They reach high school not knowing how to socially interact, dance, and communicate without a cell phone. They reach puberty without sex education, knowing how to take care of a animal, much less endure an unwanted pregnancy, have a family. Worse: grow up without `empathy’ towards others – understanding citizenship – able to actively represent what their `pledge of allegiance’ truly means. Curriculum goals should be: love of reading, nutrition, exercise, music, dance, self-defense, crafts, animals, home economics: accounting, shopping, canning, sewing, and nature versus focus on technology that currently exists.

Sir Ken Robinson https://www.ted.com/talks/sir_ken_robinson_do_schools_kill_creativity There should be increased surveillance monitoring that makes sure equality for all without bullying, prejudice, social/mental/physical abuse. Movies and exercises that teach ethical values should dominate.

James Martin, SJ 54 mins · NB: Two post limit. Pope Francis has reaffirmed the "primacy of conscience." This teaching, which has been downplayed, set aside or even ignored in the last few decades by some, reminds us that it is the longstanding tradition of the church that an informed conscience is the final arbiter of the moral life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Bourgeois … I believe that our Church's teaching that excludes women from the priesthood defies both faith and reason and cannot stand up to scrutiny. This teaching has nothing to do with God, but with men, and is rooted in sexism. Sexism, like racism, is a sin. And no matter how hard we may try to justify discrimination against women, in the end, it is not the way of God, but of men who want to hold on to their power. As people of faith we believe in the primacy of conscience. Our conscience connects us to the Divine. Our conscience gives us a sense of right and wrong and urges us to do what is right, what is just. A contemporary panel of modern religious leaders like Joel Hoffman, Greg Carey, and Roy Bourgeois is needed to update newly discovered and researched illumination. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Bourgeois Greg Carey, Contributor Professor of New Testament, Lancaster Theological Seminary https://www.huffpost.com/entry/where-do-liberal-bible-scholars-come-from_b_1774447 “Informed conscience is something Catholics are increasingly citing as support for disregarding official teaching. America’s goal should be to rank first as the most equalitarian country ahead of Slovenia, Norway, Denmark…and rank first ahead of Finland as the happiest country. https://www.news18.com/news/world/ambassador-of-finland-tells-you-why-they-are-the-happiest-people-in-the-world-2075935.html Ambassador of Finland Tells You Why They are the Happiest People in the World State policies on welfare, mutual trust, freedom and equality have contributed to making Finland the happiest country for the second time in a row -… In 2019, Finland was named as the happiest place on Earth for the second year in a row. Published by the UN, the World Happiness Report ranked 156 countries by happiness levels, assessing factors such as life expectancy, social support and corruption. Three of Finland’s Nordic cousins, Norway, Denmark and Iceland, took the next consecutive places. Why are Finnish people so happy? It is not because of the weather, for sure! On a societal level, Finland's success can be attributed to its rigid social safety network, culture of trust, high-quality education, and a strong commitment to gender equality. On a personal level, many Finns cite their connection to nature as an important source of happiness. Finland has come a long way and put deliberate efforts on creating happiness – it was not served to the Finns on a silver plate. 150 years ago 10% of the Finnish population perished due to a famine. In 1918, a year after Finland gained its independence, the country underwent a painful and divisive civil war. When Finland came out of World War II in 1945, it was one of the poorest nations in Europe. The Finnish happiness and welfare has been built from scratch. The happiness in Finland stems from a number of policies for welfare, mutual trust, freedom and equality. In recent years, Finland has been named the most stable, the freest and the safest by various international bodies. Finland has progressive taxation and wealth redistribution, which enables free healthcare, free quality education for all and generous parental leave. A healthy work-life balance ensures that people have the chance to pursue their personal interests and feed their creativity whilst enjoying the world’s cleanest air and pristine nature. According to Transparency International, Finland is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Over 80% of Finns trust the country’s police, education and healthcare systems. Finnish society is equal. Finland is widely considered one of the best places in the world to be a mother and to be a working woman. Finnish fathers, who are also entitled to paid paternity leave, spend the most time with their children globally. Money does not bring happiness, but economic strength plays a role in keeping the Finnish society stable. Finland is not the richest country in the world but has been capable of handling an unstable global economy. Finland has had its economic slumps, particularly after the Eurozone crisis, but has been quicker than most countries to bounce back. Agile economic policy and Finnish innovativeness have had their role to play in this recovery. Other national characteristics may also play a part in creating happiness and positive resilience. The Finns have a word, sisu, which means stoic perseverance and grit, whatever comes your way. The International Day of Failure (celebrated annually on 13 October) originates from Finland and carries an important message: without the possibility of failure there is no success, and occasional failure is therefore okay. When innovating and experimenting boldly, a failure may sometimes precede a great success. No wonder Finland emerges as the third most innovative country in the world according to both Bloomberg Innovation Index and International Innovation Scorecard.

The Happiness Report of 2018 also measured immigrant happiness, and Finland topped this category as well. Happy societies are also more willing to accept and integrate immigrants. The supportive social systems and institutions make it harder for people – whether local or newcomers – to fall through the cracks. https://www.news18.com/news/world/ambassador-of-finland-tells-you-why-they-are-the-happiest-people-in-the-world-2075935.html https://www.apa.org/monitor/2013/12/job-satisfaction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Happiness_Report https://www.news18.com/news/world/ambassador-of-finland-tells-you-why-they-are-the-happiest-people-in-the-world-2075935.html
