Dear Author:
I am a disabled septuagenarian who loves to read.
My disability comes from an attack a decade ago while opening an additional refuge under a nonprofit I founded. 42 stab wounds. Following this message is letter I have been forwarding to notables describing inspiring narrative.
I was a precocious child…reading at tender age; greatly influenced age eight movie Cheaper by the Dozen for roots are from large Sicilian/Catholic family. I had to learn how to be an efficient expert if ever I was going to find `time to read’.
I have an extremely large prayer list…reinforced when in coma, believe I heard mother calling me by childhood name saying one word: NAMES. I go to daily mass. Prayer list begins wee morning; there is category for favorite authors.
Traditional ones are there, of course: Gary Jennings, Taylor Caldwell, Morris West, James Michener, Leon Uris, John Hersey, John Steinbeck, Upton Sinclair, Jessica Mitford, Franz Werzel, Margaret Mitchell, Pearl Buck, Edna Ferber, Frank McCourt, Pat Conroy, Cormac McCarthy, Tom Clancy, Harper Lee, Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Edith Warton, Hardy, Shakespeare, Dante, Marlow, Chaucer, Jack London, Mark Twain, Somerset Maugham, O’Henry… then there are contemporaries:
Catheryn Ryan Hyde, Richard North Patterson, Dean Koontz, Luis Urrea, Stephen King, David Baldacci, John Grisham…
The last stab wound was in the right eye…left eye is weak. My reading prowess has been reduced considerably. How I love LARGE PRINT.
I’m currently reading John Grisham’s The Rogue Lawyer. What I am so struck with is how he got it so right regarding: law, jail, corruption in our legal system. You see, by working with the homeless and recovery for almost two decades, I got in vivo experiential education. My inspirational role models inspire me: St. Vincent de Paul, Mother Teresa, St. Catherine Drexel, Dorothy Day…, and contemporaries: Mimi Silbert, Jean Forbarth, Mary Jo Copeland…; and authors vicariously instruct me via reading and/or Garrison Keillor’s Writers’ Almanac.
I truly believe in HIGHER MYSTERY and Kabbalistic synchronicity that unifies our universal kinship. I salute my spiritual soul brothers and sisters who are `listening’ and seeding their talents in loving/respecting our neighbor as self.
I am FAITHFUL in my daily prayers extolling individual NAMES.
God Bless You/Yours Always.
Respectfully, MJG
