When ARC was conceived in 1969, it‘s mission was `to care and share as able‘.
In the beginning, I had no knowledge at all about starting a nonprofit…when I finally learned a little bit, it was too daunting for me…paperwork was confusing.
Then I learned about ULC, Universal Life Church…simply the founder believed that `many’ are called…but `few’ know what to do…so, ULC started a simple way for
`a calling to be answered’…you could become a minister…start your own `mission’.
That’s what I did for ARC until 1983 when I learned more…and then filed formally for 501(c)(3) status. When and if you are ready for that, I have written guidelines…and NOLO publication in the library…http://www.nolo.com How To Start A Nonprofit.
How To Forms available also from: The IRS, Fresno, CA 93888 (800) 829-3676 -
Form 990 and Schedule A. - State of California Franchise Tax Board, Box 942857, Sacramento, CA 94267 (800) 338-0505 Form 199,
Registry of Charitable Trusts, Box 903447, Sacramento 94203-4476 - Form CT-2.
However, unless you have `someone to help who truly loves paperwork’…and unless who are determined to `be part of the big leagues’…macro business concepts,
I strongly suggest stay away from the concept of government/grant funding…stay small and true to your mission of helping…you will be able to accept donations…it just will be simple and non complication.
Even though ULC is a `giant’ now…and you can even do everything on the internet…I really suggest you do it by mail…keeping a copy of everything. Here’s how:
Write ULC and send in a check or money order donation ($3?), request minister.
If you need one for a second individual, do it again; do not combine more than one.
Write ULC and send in a check or money order donation ($3?), request church charter.
Give them name of your church. Example…Pass It On Ministries is ARC too.
Once you get ordination/church charter back, you will have a church number.
On your business cards…list info: Pass It On Ministries/ULC Charter No. ______
Annually, send ULC a simple report on services rendered with donation ($3?).
Example…PIO sponsored educational and charitable outreach recovery aide.
Expenses: Overhead/Utilities/Et Al - $10,000.00;
Self-Generating Labor (No Salaries) + Donations - $10,000.00
Keep a simple 3 ring binder; and keep records/receipts of everything.
If you give a receipt, make sure you list above info; when someone donates services and or their items like a printer, it’s called a `tax-deductible gift-in-kind donation’.###+++
