Solo Senior Resource 2010: Lakewood, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Long Beach
When I moved to this area in 2007, I was struck immediately with DASH services, M thru F day free transportation, (562) 920-9702. But you have to make reservations one week in advance. ACCESS for disabled seniors is also available (877) 628-2232 Orange County, (877) 517-6884 Los Angeles.
There is a Seniors Club in every city – my favorite is Hawaiian Gardens – they are the best in hospitality (Latin culture dominant) – making peers feel welcome. http://hgcity.org/seniors.php
When you are alone, interacting with peers socially is just as vital for health as anything else. The more active you are, the healthier you are. Peer support is crucial: music, fun, activity a must.
ABC Adult school offered at Fredde campus free computer class – it was so, so popular. Alas, now they are charging…but some classes for Hawaiian Garden residents I believe are still complimentary. http://www.abcadultschool.edu/index.html (562) 926-6734
One of my favorites is book clubs… http://www.colapublib.org Best deal in town: you can order books on line, even latest release DVD’s (same as Blockbuster, but you don’t pay) and my favorite: book clubs –contact each library to see what’s available. On line reference librarians are phenomenal.
One problem area…technically when something is offered and funded by federal and/or state-city tax funds, it is supposed to be `free will donation’ and/or complimentary based on income. Yet, at Senior Centers where lunch is provided – the word donation is used; but `expected’ charge is more suited for description – in other words, seniors are charged. Many Seniors are on SSI with very limited Social Security – even postage is precious for these peers.
Every city has parks & recreation catalog delivered to home…call your city if you don’t receive it:
